What is a Bullet Journal?
The Bullet Journal was developed by designer Ryder Carroll. A Bullet Journal or otherwise known as a BuJo is basically a journal customized to your life. It’s like a diary, planner, calendar and journal all wrapped up in one place. Because everything is gathered in your bullet journal, it makes it easier for you to organize and plan. And if you’re anything like me, who is someone that has little reminders and notes left on papers all over the house, you will find that the bullet journal basically turns all that chaos into a more structured system which will help you to be productive and reach your goals.
A bullet journal doesn’t need to look a certain way. The purpose of it is to direct you towards things that matter to you. It’s about how it makes you feel and it’s an outlet for you to get creative by colouring or doing bullet journal doodles. It can also be used for mental health related ideas and writing down any goals you might have, whether it be current goals or future goals.
Who is a Bullet Journal Good For?
Anyone can use a bullet journal. A bujo is good for anyone that needs some organization in their lives and also enjoys being creative.
- A bullet journal is good for people who are into goal setting and habit tracking.
- It’s good for those who really love planners.
- Bullet journaling is good for people who really enjoy keeping a journal or diary, but they’re having trouble sticking to the habit of using them.
- People who want to be more organized and who really want to love planners.
- A bullet journal is great for those that have a million little to-do notes and lists floating around. (Like me!)
- Anyone who loves the traditional pen and paper to-do lists will love keeping a bullet journal.
- Bullet journaling is great for people who like stationary, journaling, scrapbooking, beautiful pens, etc…
How to Keep a Bullet Journal
First off, you need to start with a blank journal of any size, it all depends on what you’re comfortable with. There are a few things to know before getting started, so let’s check those out.
Terms to Know for Keeping a Bujo and Doing Bullet Journal Doodles
Bullet Journal – This is a method of note taking and journaling that uses bullet points as the main structure.
Index – An index, like in books, is a table of contents that you update as you go.
Daily Log – A daily log is basically stuff you did and/or need to do that day.
Monthly Log – A monthly log is similar to a traditional calendar. It includes stuff you need to do that month, as well as stuff you forgot to do last month.
Rapid Logging – This is the official language of Bujo. The idea is to trade full sentences and instead jot down quick notes using keywords and symbols.
Future Log – A future log is a year-at-a-glance calendar, where you can include events, goals and long term stuff you need to do.
Symbols Used in a Bullet Journal
There are different symbols that are used in bullet journaling and each one has a different meaning. Symbols are the way that you distinguish different tasks or goals that you write down.
Now that we know the terms and symbols for a bullet journal, it’s time to learn how to set it up.
How to Set Up A Bullet Journal
Just like in a book, you start with an index. In the index you will list the page numbers and the contents of each page. You can continue adding to this page as you go along in your Bujo.
Next, you can set up your pages yearly. On these pages, you can include any yearly goals or events, for example birthdays or an appointment you have set up further in the year.
Now set up monthly pages, with a space next to each month to write bigger events of the month. Write down the dates of the month in a vertical line on the left side of the page. On the right side of the page, you’ll write all the tasks and events of the month.
You can also set up your pages to be divided by the seven days of the week.
Collections are additional pages besides the monthly and weekly pages. In collection pages, you will add stuff like:
- Mood trackers
- Ideal morning routine
- Movies to watch
- Books to read
- Self-care ideas
- Date night ideas
- Goal trackers – so notes to remind yourself to walk daily or drink water daily
What is Required for a Bullet Journal
To be able to draw your bullet journal doodles, you will need just a few things.
You will need to start with a blank journal. You can use a plain journal with blank pages, like the Paperage Journal Blank Page Notebook found on Amazon. You can also use a journal that has dots, which makes it very flexible to different layouts. Check out the Bullet Dotted Journal Kit, which comes with accessories for your bullet journal doodles.
A pen is required, so that you can jot down your to-do’s and so that you can do your little bullet journal doodles. I love cute or fancy pens and if you do to, then check out Amazon, they have some great choices!
Calendar stamps for your bullet journal can help keep you organized. You can also use calendar stickers, which do the same job. You can find tons of cute ones if you look online.
Washi tape is so popular today and can be found in all different colours and patterns. It helps brighten up your page and make your bullet journal doodles look extra cute!
If you’re not great at drawing doodles or you need some help in organizing your pages in your Bujo, then look into getting some bullet journal stencils. Some are cute little doodle stencils and others are stencils set up for organizing your pages easier.
